A Rhinestone Shines- Handmade Dolly Parton Memorial Keepsake

Handmade from the very first design to the very last rhinestone.

Created as a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton, this keepsake is inspired by words that seem to capture so much of what made her special:

“A rhinestone shines just as good as a diamond.”

Why I Made This Keepsake

I grew up in a household full of Dolly.

My Mama absolutely adored her, and she passed that love right along to her children. Dolly's music wasn't simply something playing in the background of our childhood—it became part of some of the memories I cherish most.

I can still remember the anticipation of Friday nights at our house. Dolly would be blaring from the radio, and before long, our family would be having our own little dance-a-thon and sing-a-thon right there at home.

We didn't grow up with a lot of money. There weren't always expensive outings, elaborate entertainment, or extravagant things to do.

But we had those Friday nights.

We had music. We had dancing. We had singing. We had each other.

And looking back, those simple nights became some of the richest memories of my childhood.

As I grew older—and especially after serving in the military—I learned that women are often given a very different message.

At some point, we're expected to grow up. We're told, directly or indirectly, to dull our sparkle. Pink is childish. Rhinestones are silly. Being girly isn't serious enough. Being soft somehow means you aren't strong enough. We're encouraged to tone ourselves down, quiet our personalities, and leave behind the things we loved when we were girls if we want to be taken seriously as women.

And somewhere along the way, I decided I didn't believe that anymore.

Dolly was one of those reminders that helped keep that little spark alive, even through some of the harder seasons.

She made it feel okay to love the pink.

To love the rhinestones.

To have a personality that's a little loud while still having a heart that's incredibly soft.

She showed generations of women that femininity doesn't have to be something we outgrow—and that loving the things that make us feel girly doesn't make us frivolous, incapable, or weak.

You can be soft and strong.

You can be feminine and formidable.

You can wear the rhinestones and still do the hard things.

Maybe that's part of why this particular quote has always meant something more to me:

“A rhinestone shines just as good as a diamond.”

Because maybe the lesson was never really about rhinestones or diamonds.

Maybe it's about refusing to believe that something has less value simply because the world considers it less sophisticated, less expensive, less serious—or a little too sparkly.

That's what I wanted this keepsake to represent.

It's a tribute to Dolly, certainly. But it's also a tiny piece of my childhood. It's Friday nights dancing with my family. It's a reminder of my Mama. It's the woman I became after having experiences that required me to be strong. And it's my decision as that woman to still surround myself with pink, flowers, rhinestones, and all the beautiful little things that make me happy.

I don't believe we have to dull our sparkle to prove our strength.

So I made something sparkly.

By hand.

One rhinestone at a time.

Made Completely by Hand

This isn't a pre-made heart or mass-produced blank that I've simply decorated.

Every keepsake is created from start to finish by Prickly Petal Boutique.

I began by designing the original heart-shaped clay cutter specifically for this project and then 3D printing that cutter in-house.

Using my original cutter, I form each heart from polymer clay before baking and preparing it for all of the tiny details that make the finished piece special.

I also designed the quote lettering myself, cut it using my cutting machine, and carefully apply the lettering by hand.

Then comes perhaps the most time-consuming—and sparkliest—part:

Every single rhinestone is individually placed by hand.

One rhinestone at a time, until the heart is surrounded in sparkle.

The finished keepsake receives a coat of glaze on both the front and back before I drill the hanging hole and hand assemble the finishing details, including its soft pink tassel and little DREAM charm.

Because these are genuinely handmade pieces, no two will ever be exactly alike. Small variations in the polymer clay, lettering, rhinestone placement, glaze, and finishing are part of the handmade process and make each keepsake uniquely its own.

A Keepsake Made to Be Treasured

Each finished keepsake will arrive nestled inside a gift box, ready to give or keep.

It can remain safely tucked inside its box as a treasured memento or be displayed on a shelf, dresser, desk, curio cabinet, or another special place in your home.

Wherever it lives, I hope it serves as a little reminder that sometimes the things that shine the brightest aren't necessarily the things that cost the most.

Sometimes they're Friday nights.

A radio playing too loudly.

A Mama who loves Dolly.

A family dancing together in the living room.

And memories you wouldn't trade for all the diamonds in the world.

A Keepsake That Gives Back

Because I wanted this tribute to do more than simply commemorate Dolly, 40% of the purchase price of every keepsake sold will be donated by Prickly Petal Boutique to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, helping support its mission of putting books into the hands of young children and encouraging a lifelong love of reading.

There is something especially meaningful to me about memories from my own childhood helping create opportunities for another child's childhood.
